California’s Prop 65
Barrier Technologies products and California’s Proposition 65
California passed Proposition 65 in 1985 in an effort to keep California residents educated about the potential risk of exposure to many diverse types of chemicals and ingredients found in various foods and other products. Recently California made it mandatory that products that contain any of these ingredients apply a label identifying themselves, using specific symbols and language. Over the years, the OEHHA, the lead state agency charged with administering the law, has published a list of over 800 substances known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Under certain circumstances, businesses selling products to customers in California in retail locations, via websites, or mail-order catalogs are advised to provide “clear and reasonable warnings” before knowingly exposing people to any of the hundreds of chemicals on the list. Prop 65 was intended to help Californians make informed decisions and it is important to note that the California government has clarified that: “the fact that a product bears a Proposition 65 warning does not mean by itself that the product is unsafe”.
The government has also explained, “You could think of Proposition 65 more as a ‘right to know’ law than a pure product safety law.” https://oehha.ca.gov/proposition-65/general-info/proposition-65-plain-language WARNING: Our Radiation Protective Eyewear can expose you to chemicals including Lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.
