In this guide, you will find detailed information about the different types of radiation protection lead aprons and other protective apparel. Our goal is to provide a resource that helps you select the best lead and lead equivalency aprons, whether you manage a clinical, diagnostic, laboratory, or industrial facility. For additional information and guidance from radiation protection professionals, contact Barrier Technologies today.
I. First, a Refresher on Radiation Protection
Ionizing radiation like Gamma rays and X-rays poses a health risk in any setting, be it medical, diagnostic, or any other. Understanding how this type of energy works and the health threats it poses is the key to creating a safe environment for all individuals who are exposed to it.
Ionizing radiation is powerful enough to dislodge electrons from atoms, which damages living tissue and DNA genes. Certain materials can repel ionizing radiation, a process called attenuation. An example of this is lead, though there are other materials that can provide the same level of attenuation, in other words, limit the amount of radiation that enters the body.
Wearing protective apparel like lead aprons can reduce these health risks and create a safe environment for everyone in your facility. The right gear can help you stay compliant and adhere to your specific industry regulations.
It’s also important to note that the right protective gear should also be comfortable and lightweight, allowing your professionals to perform their duties seamlessly.
II. Types of Aprons
Barrier Technologies manufactures several different types of x-ray aprons that are ideal for various settings including industrial and medical facilities. Here’s a breakdown of the specific design and application of each apron.
1. The Basic
The Basic is our most cost-effective frontal apron, ideal for procedures and other activities with frontal radiation exposure. It’s equipped with a 2-inch buckle and a velcro shoulder strap to ensure it fits snugly that helps ensure the neck area is protected.

2. The Standard Vest and Skirt
Maximum protection and freedom of movement for all types of medical procedures and radiation-related activities.
It’s the ideal choice for long procedures as the even weight distribution helps reduce fatigue in the body.

IV. About Our Protective Equipment
A. Lead Equivalency and Attenuation
Our aprons and accessories come in .35mm and .5mm Pb attenuation. Our .5mm aprons offer 99% attenuation and .35mm aprons offer 97% attenuation @100KVP. You can choose classic Pb aprons or alternatives made from other materials that provide the same level of protection.
